DRIVE Supports Shelby McMillan

In March of 2022 DRIVE learned of a young girl named Shelby McMillan who was born with a muscle condition called Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita (AMC). After hearing her story and what was needed for Shelby to move forward, DRIVE made the decision to help cover some of her upcoming medical expenses so that her parents could focus on helping her to recover post op.

Shelby McMillan was born with a muscle condition called Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita (AMC). This muscle disorder affects the muscles and joints in the upper and lower extremities. It causes tightness and impacts the function and range of motion in the joints. She was also born with bilateral clubfeet.

Shelby had already had 2 surgeries to help correct her clubfeet. The next step was to address her muscle condition, for which the McMillan Family had found a doctor in West Palm Beach, Florida who specializes in this condition named Dr. Feldman. Dr. Feldman treats people at The Paley Institute and all over the world with this type of medical condition.

After contacting Dr. Feldman and having him review multiple X-rays, he recommended a growth plate to be placed in the tibia of Shelby’s right leg and one in her left femur.

Moving forward with his surgical plans would prove to be a costly endeavor for the family which included purchasing a special BCBS insurance plan for Shelby that came with a large deductible and high monthly cost.

Shelby’s surgery was performed on June 29, 2022. Her procedure went better than expected and she was released from the hospital on the same day to finish her recovery at home!
